First Hill Books – New Book Proposal
Checklist:
- Complete your proposal as fully as possible. The information you provide allows us to give your work the fully informed consideration it deserves.
- Make sure you give as much detail about the proposed content and structure of your book as you can. Supply some supporting materials where possible or appropriate, such as a sample chapter.
- Think carefully about the intended readership for your book and existing competing titles. How will your book differ from or complement them?
- Be sure to cover all the practicalities: the likely word count, indexing responsibilities, inclusion of images or copyright material, your proposed delivery date and whether there are any digital or mixed media considerations to be aware of.
- Email your completed proposal form along with supporting documentation, such as your CV and a writing sample, to proposal@anthempress.com.
- A member of our acquisitions team will be in touch, to confirm receipt and discuss next steps. If you have any questions, please contact proposal@anthempress.com.
The Commissioning Process
All proposals we decide to consider are sent for external, confidential peer review, as will any sample chapters or supporting materials you supply. This process is managed by your Acquisitions Editor who will work with you to help you make the proposal as comprehensive and polished as possible. We aim to have peer reviews in place within two months of receiving your proposal.
Our peer-review process is not double blind and as such your name and affiliation will be made known to the reviewers. Reviewers will be selected at our discretion.
Your Acquisitions Editor will keep you informed of the submission process and send you copies of the reviews when they are available, inviting you to respond.
If the reviews are good, and the editor is confident about the project and how it fits their list, they will present your proposal at our in-house Publishing Acquisitions Meeting. Editorial, Sales and Marketing colleagues will then make an informed decision based on all the documentary information available as to whether the book is a good fit for the Anthem list and the market.
If agreed at the meeting, your Acquisitions Editor will then be authorised to offer you a publishing contract setting out the formal details of the agreement between us, such as delivery dates, the extent of manuscript, and remuneration.
Contract Issuance
You will be receiving an electronic copy of the contract for digital signature from our editorial team. Please note that we do not send hard copy versions of the contract for sign off and works completely in digital format.
Points to note
Unless your contract says otherwise, as the author, you are responsible for obtaining permission and paying any fees to use any third-party copyright material that your book and supporting website resources contain. So, it’s worth getting a sense now of any third-party copyright material that you’re likely to need.
If you are an editor, you will need to ensure that your contributors understand the requirements in these guidelines and provide proof of permission obtained at the same time they send you their contribution.
Proposal Peer review
The acquisitions editor will be the first person to read your proposal. They will initially asses whether it fits the scope of our publishing. If it is considered both academically distinctive and commercially viable, your proposal and sample materials will be sent out to at least two readers for anonymous scholarly peer review. Your editor will pass on the readers’ comments as soon as they are available (generally within 4 to 6 weeks). You will then be invited to respond to the reports and to make any changes to your proposal.
Publishing Committee review
Once it has passed peer review, your proposal will be presented for final approval to the publishing committee who comment on whether your proposal will make a genuine scholarly impact and make the final decision about whether the Press should publish your book.
The publishing committee is made up of the editorial and marketing teams from Anthem Press who discuss the strategy for publishing and promoting your book or series.
Your editor will inform you of the publishing decision following the meeting along with any comments from the committee. If your proposal is approved, you will receive a contract agreement from the Press.
Manuscript Peer Review
On receipt of the manuscript, your acquisitions editor will review the manuscript, check the word count and that the number of any illustrations is in line with the contract agreement and inform you of the next stages. The majority of titles are sent for external peer review at this stage and this process takes approximately 6-10 weeks. Books appearing in series will usually be sent to the series editor/s for review. Readers’ reports, series editors’ reports and any queries or suggestions from the acquisitions editor will be sent to you for a response. Any revisions should be discussed with your acquisitions editor and a final submission date agreed.

Style Guide
Please familiarize yourself with the Anthem Press Style Guide and ensure that all book contributors follow it closely. If you have a particular style you would prefer to use, our editorial team is able to accommodate this if it is recognized and consistently applied.
Anthem Press Style Guide
Delivery Date and Length
The agreed delivery date of your manuscript is stated in the contract. We need to know of any delays you encounter as soon as possible so that we can work with you to agree a new date. We schedule books for publication up to fifteen months in advance and it is imperative that we work from correct schedules to best organize the production and promotion of your book.
The contract also states a maximum length for your manuscript, please do all you can to adhere to it! If, while writing your book, it becomes clear that the agreed length is unworkable, you should let your Acquisition Editor know as soon as possible. We can generally accommodate minor changes in length (i.e. within 10%) but more significant changes will require serious consideration as they will have an impact on the list price and, in turn, on the sales potential of the book.
Permissions
Permission from the copyright owner must be obtained for any third-party materials cited that fall outside the remit of ‘fair dealing’ or (in the US) ‘fair use’ conventions. For information on the interpretation of fair dealing in UK law, please consult the Society of Authors website.
You should note that there is no fair dealing exemption for epigraphs, which always require permission, as do quotations of any length from poems, letters, lyrics and recipes. Artwork and images, including photographs, maps and line drawings also require written permission. Photocopies or scans of permissions granted must be submitted with your manuscript on delivery.
Cover Design and Book Title
The sales cycle for your book begins before you have completed the manuscript and so promotional copy and a cover design need to be agreed ahead of publication. Our designers will start working on the cover design approximately 15 months before your scheduled publication date. Your Acquisition Editor will contact you to invite your input. If an image is to be used, we require high-resolution images, licensed for commercial use (as opposed to editorial use), with model releases where appropriate. We would thus prefer that images suggested to us are sourced through reputable agencies such as Corbis, Getty Images or Shutterstock.
If you are considering a title change for your book, please discuss this with your Acquisition Editor as early as possible. Once your book has been advertised in a catalogue it will also have entered all the major bibliographic services internationally, with advance sales being generated. At this point it is very unadvisable to consider changing the title.
Manuscript Submission
Please ensure that the final manuscript matches our House Style, has been proof-read and is as free from error or omission as you can make it. Additions or alterations made at proof stage are very expensive and costs may be passed on to you as the author. If English is not your native language, you should consider having the book read by a colleague or professional editor who is a native speaker before submission. If you are the editor of a contributed volume, it is your responsibility to check through the entire manuscript, paying particular attention to any chapters by non-native speakers. We ask you to ensure that the chapters are consistent in style throughout the book, especially in terms of their notes and references.
Please ensure that you include every element to be incorporated in the book, including (but not limited to):
- Title page
- Table of contents
- List of contributors
- List of Illustrations
- Glossary
- Foreword or preface
- Notes
- Bibliography
The manuscript should be delivered electronically as an email attachment. Please ensure that each chapter is saved as a separate document. Artwork should be supplied electronically as high resolution scans (minimum 300 dpi). Scans or photocopies of all permissions documents must be supplied at this stage.
Manuscript Peer Review
On receipt of the manuscript, your Editorial Coordinator will review the manuscript, check the word count and that the number of any illustrations is in line with the contract agreement and inform you of the next stages. The majority of titles are sent for external peer review at this stage and this process takes approximately 8 -12 weeks. Books appearing in series will usually be sent to the series editor/s for review. Readers’ reports, series editors’ reports and any queries or suggestions from the Editorial Coordinator will be sent to you for a response. Any revisions should be discussed with your Acquisition Editor and a final submission date agreed.
The Production Schedule
Please inform your Editorial coordinator as far in advance as possible if you will be unavailable at any point during the production process. Any absence to which we have not been alerted will have an impact as we work to tight schedules. Your contract will state whether, as is usually the case, you are to supply the index at proof stage. If you do not plan to supply your own index please inform your Editorial Coordinator who may be able to commission a freelance indexer. Please be aware that this cost will be passed to you as author. Guidance on compiling the index can be found here.
Following receipt and formal approval of the final manuscript, your Editorial Coordinator will arrange handover to the Production Editor so that production process can begin.
The Production Process
You will receive a letter of introduction from the Production Editor at Anthem, confirming receipt of the manuscript and outlining the route your book will take to make it ready for print and digital distribution.
The prepress stages are:
COPYEDITING: Our production team evaluates all final manuscripts prior to copyediting them. If a manuscript requires a major revision, authors may be asked to copyedit the manuscript using an independent professional in line with Anthem’s feedback or we may arrange for such a copyedit on the authors’ behalf.
TYPESETTING: On completion of copyediting, a final, clean ‘camera‐ready’ manuscript is prepared. The electronic files are sent to our typesetting team, who will set the text to ‘book’ form and generate the first proofs. The typesetting process takes approximately three weeks, but may vary according to the length and complexity of the manuscript.
PROOFREADING: The first proofs are sent to the author electronically as a PDF, along with instructions on how to submit corrections. Corrections to the proofs should be minor – authors should not rewrite or make substantial additions. The editorial team then reviews the proof corrections before sending them to the typesetter for implementation.
INDEXING: The author will use the final proofs to prepare an index if they have been contracted to do so.
PRINTING: The final text and cover proofs will undergo a thorough editorial review before they are sent for printing.
EBOOKS: After the author approves the final proofs the production team will generate the ebook in Epub and WebPDF. The ebooks are shared with Anthem’s ebook partners for distribution to online retail channels and library suppliers.
AUDIOBOOKS: The authors share the professional final audiobook with Anthem. We will complete the post-production activities and set up the audiobook through designated sales channels.
The Publishing Schedule
The printed book is delivered approximately 6 to 7 months after the manuscript is submitted to the Anthem editorial team.
Review Process: up to two months.
Copyediting: approximately one month.
Typesetting: two to four weeks, depending on the complexity of the project (please consult with your production editor).
Proofreading: approximately one month.
Indexing: approximately two weeks.
Printing: two to eight weeks, depending on the complexity of the project (please consult with your production editor).
